Talking to Girls about their Periods...

  • Do you feel comfortable and equipped to talk with your daughter about periods?

  • Are you still tainted by your own experience when you first got your period?

  • Are you aware of the myths and misconceptions that still effect how we think about periods?

  • Do you understand how the female body actually works?

  • Would you like to be prepared when it comes to all things contraception?

The reality is, it is often an awkward, uncomfortable or even dreaded conversation for many parents and adults. We may try to make it something special but inside we are cringing because we are still weighted with our own complications and challenges from our own experiences or from the societal concepts we have been fed about menstruation.

The subject of periods is still taboo, so having a normal and natural conversation about this topic is rare, even in todays so-called modern and progressive world. Unfortunately, the cultural and societal ideas of periods being an inconvenience, something to hide, a secret and even a curse are still very much embedded in the fabric of society, so we end up knowingly or unknowingly carry this with us in our conversations with our daughters and even our sons.

It doesn’t need to be this way. We can have open and honest conversations about periods without feeling uncomfortable. And it’s not about splashing the word ‘period’ all over the place so we get used to it – this is not how we break the stigma.

We need to have a deeper and more wholesome understanding and appreciation of menstruation for ourselves. We need to put the work in and bring to the surface, the impositions that have poisoned our own bodies and our own experiences. This program addresses all of this, providing an opportunity for parents to appreciate the role they play in offering foundational and practical support for the young women in their lives. And this starts by being fully informed.
